WILL A TAILGUNNER™ FIT MY BIKE?
Most likely. Tailgunner® models come in direct-fit applications for specific models in which case they are a very simple "plug and play" installation and universal slip fit systems. The Universals will fit a variety of makes and models with exhaust headers ranging from 1.5" through 2.5". Just determine if there is 4" or 5" (depending on model) diameter of clearance where the pipes will mount and the bike. There is a support bracket on the backside of each Tailgunner®. The Tailgunner® universal fit models are a simple installation on many bikes. With others a certain amount of modification, such as a simple support bracket, will be required. This is an expected and enjoyable part of custom motorcycle building. Tailgunners® are mounted on everything from stock Harley Davidsons to metric cruisers and sport bikes and will slip-fit onto most after-market exhaust systems as well. American or Metric.
WHAT IS THE INLET SIZE OF THE UNIVERSAL MODELS?
The universal Tailgunners® will slip fit onto any exhaust pipe from 1.5" through 2.5" using our CNC machined adapters. The stock inlet size on 4' and 5" universal models is 2.5" However, we offer CNC spun aluminum adapters to allow mating with a variety of exhaust pipe sizes, manufacturers and configurations. American and metric.
The direct application models are designed to mate with their respective motorcycle models.
HOW FAST DO THE BARRELS SPIN?
Barrel speed is determined by how much and how fast the exhaust gasses are passing through the turbine system. This "flow" is established by engine displacement and exhaust configuration. A 2 into 1 system moves more air than a 2 into 2 system. The barrels spin quite easily and are designed not to "over-speed." The barrel assembly is powered by an internal stainless steel, dual turbine system. The turbine is also responsible for drawing exhaust out of the pipe at high RPM's. This system is what gives Tailgunner® Exhaust the advantage in producing an exhaust pipe that performs well and sounds great at all range and speeds.
WILL THE BEARINGS LAST IN THE HOT, CARBON ENVIRONMENT?
Tailgunner® exhaust uses the highest quality American shielded radial bearings in each model. They are designed to resist heat and corrosion and have a 100% success rating to date. To ensure smooth, even rotation of your rotary cannon exhaust barrel assemblies it is occasionally necessary to remove carbon build up within and around the bearings. The recommended interval between cleaning is approximately every 1,000 miles.
We recommend using an aerosol spray solvent such as WD-40 for cleaning.
Please Note : The bearings are not under load. They are freewheeling and well below their maximum temperature, load and heat limits.
DO YOU HAVE MAPPING FOR MY BIKE?
Motorcycle tuning is a complex skill that is contingent on many factors. A tuning map may work well on an application that is otherwise OEM and stock. However, we find that many of Tailgunner® customers have already made modifications to their bikes. A good, qualified technician will be able to tune your bike without the aid of mapping.
CAN I TUNE A FUEL INJECTED (EFI) BIKE WITHOUT MAPPING?
Yes. There are several options. We recommend a Dynojet Power Commander. They are affordable and user friendly. Please visit their site at: http://www.powercommander.com for a lot of good information. Power Commaders are the perfect answer for owners that are making basic air cleaner or exhaust pipe changes on fuel injected models. The above product is manufactured with consumer installation in mind. i.e. plug and play. Any competent, qualified motorcycle service center can also perform these services. We suggest talking with them first to ensure they are familiar with these products.
CAN YOU RUN BOTH PIPES OF A BIKE THROUGH ONE TAIL GUNNER EXHAUST?
Yes. A two into one is an easy installation and provides the best performance gains.
HOW MUCH RESTRICTION DO I GET WITH A TAILGUNNER®?
Tailgunners® were designed to allow your exhaust to flow as efficiently as possible. They are an extremely free flowing slip on.
WHAT KIND OF PERFORMANCE INCREASE CAN I EXPECT?
When properly tuned you will enjoy a moderate increase in both horsepower and torque. Generally in the neighborhood of 4 to 5 lbs of torque and horsepower. Please see the "Performance" page.
HOW MUCH BACK-PRESSURE?
Tailgunner® slip-ons are designed to be as non-restrictive (free flowing) as possible while giving you a deep, throaty sound. The most noticeable changes with a Tailgunner® are the improved sound, aggressive styling, weight reduction and a extra horse power and torque.
WHAT DOES IT SOUND LIKE?
The GUNSHIP™ and B-52 JET-PIPE™ models are louder than a stock Bagger. A deep and low, throaty, big bike sound is the best description. These models come stock with a 10" packed baffle and 2.5" core. They are also available unbaffled.
The universal models are loud, deep and throaty. The bark without the bite. The universal Tailgunners are more accurately described as a resonator rather than a muffler as we employ deflection rather than absorption as a method of tuning sound. Please listen to the universal audio file or video on the website.
WHAT ARE THEY MADE OF?
Our housings are made of either 16-gauge steel or stainless steel depending on the model. All units are chromed to perfection or highly polished if stainless steel. The barrel assembly and turbines are a combination of stainless steel and brushed aluminum. All hardware is stainless steel. Every Tailgunner® is made in America.
WHERE ARE TAILGUNNERS® MADE?
Tailgunner® Exhaust manufactures and assembles all of its products in the United States. We believe this is the best way to ensure our products quality.
HOW DO I MEASURE THE OUTSIDE DIAMETER OF MY EXHAUST / HEADER PIPE?
Universal 4" and 5" Tailgunners are a slip fit installation. This means the pipe slips on OVER your existing exhaust / head pipe. For an accurate measurement remove the current muffler and any heat shields so the end of the exhaust pipe is exposed. Simply measure the pipe opening from outside top to outside bottom or left to right. Remember, you are measuring the outside diameter as Tailgunner models slip over the existing exhaust pipe. Please see the "universal adapter instructions" under the Tailgunner® Info drop down menu.
DOES TAILGUNNER® OFFER A WARRANTY?
Yes. All Tailgunner® exhaust units come with a full one year warranty. This warranty covers and is limited to the repair or replacement of any unit due to manufacturing defects at the manufacturers discretion.
I LOVE MY UNIVERSAL FIT TAILGUNNERS® BUT SOMETIMES THEY ARE A BIT LOUD FOR MY NEIGHBORHOOD. DO YOU OFFER ANYTHING TO QUIET THEM DOWN A BIT?
The Tailgunner® R&D team is developing our own internal baffle system so you will have the option of reducing sound levels while maintaining a very free flowing unit. Until then, we suggest using a generic insertable baffle in the exhaust pipe right before the Tailgunner®. They come in a wide variety of sizes, are inexpensive and available through many sources. The universal Tailgunner® rotary cannon exhausts are more accurately described as a resonator rather than a muffler.
HOW MUCH DO THEY COST?
Please see the "Shop On-Line" tab on the website. All models are priced. Stealth black models have an additional cost and ship time.
HOW CAN I ORDER?
Directly from Tailgunner® by telephone, (508) 693-1944. On our website (Shop Online.) Or through one of our authorized dealers. Please see dealer page for locations.
